I've experienced this myself, more than once. In college, I had a professor who kept raving about how amazing I sounded, even when I told him my throat hurt after every single lesson. Later, I studied with a genuinely great teacher, but our language was a mismatch. He was a very auditory teacher, and I process better through imagery and metaphor. It wasn't until I found a teacher who thought the way I learned that I finally understood what his exercises had been trying to accomplish all along.
 

There was a point where I almost gave up singing entirely. Then I went to see Trish McCaffrey on recommendation of a friend of mine. Her studio had a six month waiting list, and I wasn't on it.
